The infants at Little Wonders always have different types of material to encourage sensory play. One particular day, we provided sponges that were a soaked in a variety of different colors of paint. The children observed all the different colors as they grabbed, poked, squeezed, and balanced other materials on the sponges.
We grow vegetables year-round in our garden at Little Wonders, and recently we noticed that the zucchini’s were ripe and ready to eat. The children picked this particular zucchini and were inspired to find a recipe to cook with it!
One day we rearranged the Toddler 2 classroom so that the children can have a separate area to play with play dough. We strategically set up this area so that various materials were at their level so they could decide on their own which materials they would like to use with their play dough.
Each child addressed the play dough in their own way, fostering creativity, originality and imagination. While the children played and manipulated the play dough, they were improving their fine motor skills and dexterity. Continue reading
Occasionally the students and their parents bring in different items for the children to add to their dress up area. Recently, one of the bundle of items brought were a variety of costume dresses for the girls to play with. The children were so ecstatic about the new addition that they immediately began helping each other get dressed and decided to have a dance off!
The children love playing with Legos and creating different things out of the small pieces. There are so many different ways to learn when using Legos in regards to mathematics. Here’s what we’ve been up to lately:
We created a math worksheet out of Legos. The children worked on addition and subtraction using the dots on the Legos piece. After a few days of practice, the children were able to create their own math worksheets out of Legos and consequently solve the problems.
