Playing with Clay

The other day we set up a provocation for the infants. The teachers set up a design table with pieces of clay that looked like small, round stones. We set each child in front of the provocation so they could take turns and explore the clay individually.

The children had a wonderful time experimenting with the clay and it’s texture. Some of the infants were anxious to get their hands in the clay and immediately dived in, while others were cautious in approaching this foreign gray mass. Once they started to see their ability to manipulate the clay with their little fingers, they loved to squeeze the material and tear it into small pieces.

Seven Skies

creativityinvolves

On the first day of school, the children began a conversation about the sky. Two of the children were telling another child that there are seven skies. The teachers overheard this discussion and asked, “What are the 7 skies?”

The students lifted their hands as high as they could in order to show that this was the “highest level of sky.” Then, they began to list the order:

First is “heaven sky”
2) Space sky
3) Earth sky
4) Dirt sky
The teacher asked, “What is dirt sky?”  They answered, “That is the sky that we are on, we are walking on it, it is right on top of the dirt.” Continue reading

Little Bits Light Bridge

Three children paired up for our latest Little Bits project. While they were researching the Little Bits website, an image of a bridge with lights captivated their interest. They immediately began brainstorming and planning to recreate this 3D model. What followed was a rich, child-lead, interactive learning experience.

First, the children created their own template of the bridge out of cardboard and frequently referred to the website directions to understand the functions of the electronic modules. Continue reading
