Food as a Language: Pizza

During this week’s food exploration, the children were asked if they wanted to make something sweet (like the food explorations we have done in the past) or make something salty. We have been discussing different tastes with the children (salty, sweet, bitter, savory), so this served as a continuation of our discussion. The majority of the students wanted to make a salty food, then as a group, the students decided on pizza.

At the beginning of our food exploration, the students were first asked to describe each material and what order they should be used in. After discussing, the children drew each step, and then we counted how many steps it would take to make our pizza. Discussing the planning and process of making a pizza is important so that each child feels empowered that their voice is heard and helps to further their understanding of the topic by speaking about it out loud (and hearing their peers speak about the topic at hand). Pumpkin Seeds

One of the parents brought pumpkin to class one day and the children loved it! They became fascinated with the seeds and what else is inside a pumpkin. To feed off this fascination and encourage their curiosity, we cut the pumpkin open and found many seeds and some gooey “orange stuff.” One of the children informed her friend that this was called the “guts.”

After observing and feeling the mush, we collected all of the seeds and saved them in a bowl. The pumpkin we cut open was rather small, so the children wanted to count how many seeds were in the pumpkin. While counting the seeds, the children discussed what we could make with pumpkin seeds. This sparked a discussion on pumpkin pie and the ingredients used to make it!

Broccoli Cheese Casserole

Each week at story time the children gather around and discuss different vegetables they like to eat. This helps us pick a recipe to go with for the week that involves that vegetable. This particular week we went with a BROCCOLI CHEESE CASSEROLE because Devyn told us how broccoli was her Favorite. :)

Making Pizza from Scratch

As we gathered around the carpet for story time, we had to make a decision on what we wanted to bake on Friday. As the children began to share their ideas, they all came to a quick agreement to make Pizza once again! The children decided what different ingredients and toppings they would like to bring for this recipe.

When we returned to school Friday morning we were excited to get to work.
