Broccoli Cheese Casserole

Each week at story time the children gather around and discuss different vegetables they like to eat. This helps us pick a recipe to go with for the week that involves that vegetable. This particular week we went with a BROCCOLI CHEESE CASSEROLE because Devyn told us how broccoli was her Favorite. :)

The children learned how to use a can opener and also took turns trying to identify and sound out measurements and words of ingredients so they could add it into the mix…

We are continuing to sound out words and putting them together..

The children all worked together taking turns and making sure the broccoli casserole was being mixed together properly.

Mixing it was fun along with seeing how the dish looked once it was all combined…

Adding LOTS of cheese was the best part because we sure do LOVE cheese!

This Casserole came out perfect and tasted great!

Learning Goals Achieved:

Reading/Comprehension of Informational Text/Procedural Texts. Students understand how to glean and use information in procedural texts and documents. Students are expected to:

  1. (A) Follow pictorial directions (e.g., recipes, science experiments);
  2. Measurement. The student directly compares the attributes of length, area, weight/mass, capacity, and/or relative temperature. The student uses comparative language to solve problems and answer questions. The student is expected to:
  3. (A)compare two containers according to capacity (holds more, holds less, or holds the same); compare two objects according to weight/mass (heavier than, lighter than or equal to)
  4. Servings:8

  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup mayonaisse
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 3 packs frozen chopped brocolli
  • 8 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cups onion, chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together condensed soup, mayonnaise, egg and onions.
  3. Place frozen broccoli into a very large mixing bowl. (I like to use my large stainless steel bowl to mix this recipe thoroughly.) Break up the frozen broccoli. Using a rubber spatula, scrape soup-mayonnaise mixture on top of broccoli, and mix well. Sprinkle on cheese, and mix well. Spread mixture into prepared baking dish, and smooth top of casserole. Season with salt, pepper and paprika.
  4. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
