Our latest project has been on butterflies, and we are reading the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar! In the book, the caterpillar eats through several fruits because he is hungry. While reading the book the children were asked to name the fruits. Most of the children answered apples to all the fruits. So that’s how our current project came about!
Our wonderful parents brought in fruit from the story. The fruit was set out on a table so that the children could see all of the fruit. We read the book and then found the fruit on the table that we read about. This was a good way to help the children identify the fruit by the name, since every fruit seems to be an apple ;0) Along side the table of fruit, we provided an art table with colors of the fruit. This way the children had the opportunity to use these materials during our discussions. This prepares the children for future project work where they will do writing and drawing as they investigate topics. Our favorite part was eating! It was like a giant, fruit buffet! What a great project in the end! We combined two of their favorite things, EATING and READING! ;0)
