Finding the Science in Flour

We have recently introduced flour as a sensory material.

 After a few days of the children playing with flour in its regular form, we explored changing the property of the flour.  We placed one container of flour in the middle of a group of children. We provided two bowls of water, and to add a little splash of fun, some food coloring! The children passed the bowls around and took turns pouring water.  The children responded well with patience, some even saying out loud who’s turn it was next. They took turns pouring drops of food coloring in the container, and we all counted out loud the number of drops. Finally we mixed the the ingredients together until the texture felt like dough.  They began to examine the dough and some even smelled it. They spent the rest of the class time, touching, feeling, smelling, and even tasting this new form of flour!
